Frequently Asked Questions

Body stress is the finite amount of stress that is locked into the physical structure of the body, most often around the spine. When the level of stress goes beyond our ability to deal with it, the stress stores up and this locked in tension causes pressure on nerves and thereby undermines the body’s communication system.

Body Stress Release is a health technique researched over many years by two chiropractors, Ewald and Gail Meggersee. The couple established BSR, a simple and logical modality, in 1981. BSR works by assisting the releasing of stored tension from the body, thereby activating a process that restores and enhances the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It does not diagnose or claim to treat conditions, does not use medication, machines, massage, manipulation, or energy meridians. It is a practical technique and not based on mystical concepts. It is gentle and works in cooperation with other forms of healthcare.

The most common reason is to seek relief from pain, mainly in the lower back, neck and shoulder area, and headaches. When tension becomes stored in a physical structure, the tissue is compressed, causing irritation of nerves and resulting in pain. Instead of suppressing pain with drugs, we deal with the cause. Pain may be masked by temporarily numbing areas in your body, stress can also cause muscle, weakness, stiffness, joint degeneration, tiredness, and also psychologically draining effects.

It is obvious that the body is designed to be self healing. The body is constantly regenerating itself. There’s an intelligence built into it, right from the start of conception with cell division.
If you came to me for lower back pain, why would I work on the entire spine? The spine is your body’s, communication and control system. The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord, extending down the bony canal formed by the vertebrae and the spine. It comprises of 31 pairs of spinal nerves that reach every cell of the body. There are also 12 pairs of cranial nerves that originate in the brain.
There is a constant flow of nerve impulses to the brain, and while this communication is normal and undisturbed, all functions will be carried out efficiently and state of health is maintained. However, the presence of Body Stress disrupts this transmission of nerve impulses, thereby undermining function. BSR sees health as the ability to adapt constructively to the stress to which one is subjected to.

I will take a case history, ask a few questions and do an assessment that will take about 10 minutes. Then, fully clothed, I’ll lower you down on the BSR table and activate your body’s bio- feedback mechanism by moving your feet in a very specific way. I do a series of stress tests, and apply light pressure to various points in specific directions. This neuromuscular response is similar to the knee-jerk reflex done by doctors. It’s the body’sintelligence that indicates the precise location and direction, not me making an educated guess. By consulting the body’s wisdom in this way, I receive information and guidance that may not be accessible in other ways. As the process is so precise, it will not require much force to provide the necessary stimulus. The session lasts around 30 minutes;
Afterwards, I may advise on posture and exercise to be halted for a while, and book the follow up sessions. To allow the body to go through the process of releasing stress, it undergoes changes and adaptations after each session. Everyone would like a quick fix to their health problems. However, each case is different, and the body has its own timing.

Commitment to an initial three sessions is imperative at specific intervals of day 1, day 4, day 11/12, as set out by the research done on the rhythm of the body’s own healing. It is a process, and you can feel the difference immediately, after three sessions, but sometimes it takes months. Each body reacts differently. The purpose of BSR is to locate the exact sites of tension and provide the correct stimulus to the area, in such a way that the brain registers the presence of Body Stress. It will then issue commands to the muscles to release the locked in pressure, so that the muscles return to normal tone, activating it’s inbuilt healing mechanism.

It could be said that healing is a process and not an event. There may be immediate relief due to the relaxing of tight muscles, which is usually the case if Body Stress occurred recently. If the stress has been present for a long time, a number of releases will be needed over a period of time, allowing the layers of tightened muscles to progressively relax back to their normal tone. You could also experience increased sensation or sensitivity, as communication is restored and healing is starting.

The effect of BSR is to improve communication between the brain and the cells of the body, by assisting the body to restore normal function. Over the years of BSR, it has been observed that this is an ongoing process with the person experiencing enhanced function in various areas.

I was in terrible pain and was going for physio for 2 months with no improvement. My Physio advised me to go for a MRI and we found that my L3 was bulging, so I was given schedule 5 pain killers, to try delay another hectic operation. Chantal introduced me to BSR and I was advised to stay off the pain killers. Ready to go for a operation with a my second fusion, I decided to give BSR a try. Surprisingly when I completed my 3 BSR sessions, my pain subsided. BSR has definitely helped me with my back and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is suffering with pain to give it a try. Chantal thank you for introducing me to BSR, it has really helped with my back!

After two pregnancies in 2 years, my body needed BSR more than I realized. Chantal and BSR have been the biggest blessing to me! Chantal is so intuitive and truly listens to my body, which has ensured I have the best experience and I see maximum results. I highly recommend BSR and cannot stop telling everyone about it.

I have been doing yogi for months. Class always starts in a sitting position, on the “sitting bones” as the instructor calls them, choosing the legs as best one can. After my second treatment with Chantal, I found in doing the seated yoga pose, my knees were able to drop closer to the floor and the pose was more comfortable.

Body Stress Release has been transformative for my overall well-being. I was amazed at how such a gentle and non-invasive approach could bring such profound relief. The sessions helped release tension I did not even realize I was holding, improving both my physical comfort and mental clarity. I now feel more aligned, energized, and balanced in my daily life. I highly recommend Body Stress Release to anyone seeking a holistic way to support their body’s natural healing processes.

Every experience I have had with Chantal has been better than the first! Her knowledge of how the body reacts to certain pressures and stresses is amazing and quite fascinating. I have for years, dealt with neck issues stemming from an auto accident in my teens, and Chantal has been providing the BSR therapy treatments for me and we are seeing a wonderful difference in the stiffness and movement in my neck area. I have enjoyed massages through the years , but the BSR therapy provides a quite different approach. She uses a very gentle, but firm and pressure , which culminates in a much needed relief of stress in the troubled areas of my neck. Chantal is such a pleasure with which to work and is extremely knowledgeable about the BSR process. I will continue to attend sessions with her and would encourage others to do so as well if they suffer with BODY STRESS in any way.

I couldn't imagine life without BSR. Helped me with shoulder issues and also when I fractured my foot and had to wear a moon boot which caused major hip discomfort, BSR was instant relief after a few sessions.

The Treatment

Body Stress Release stimulates the body to release tension and recover. We start with 3 releases in quick succession as standard: on day 1, day 4 and day 11.
During the first consultation we hold an intake interview after which the first release follows. During the interview we take stock of your medical history and current complaints. This creates the best possible picture of your health situation. We do not only look at recent events but at all stressful situations that have occurred during your life.
We explain the connection between the stored tension and the complaints that have arisen, the possible effects of the release and the best way to support the process.

The treatment table

The practitioner uses a tilting bench; you take a seat on the footboard of this treatment bench after which it is slowly tilted horizontally and the release can be started. During the treatment you always remain fully clothed.

After a treatment

After a treatment, the body will release the excess of built-up muscle tension layer by layer, which will restore the body’s resilience. Body Stress Release thereby activates the body’s self-healing capacity. This is the same capacity that heals, for example, a cut in the finger or a broken bone.

Follow-up treatments and their frequency differ per person. This depends on a number of factors:
• the duration of the presence of the complaint
• how the complaint arose
• the seriousness and intensity of the situation
• the current living and working conditions
• the speed at which the tension is released

The Technique

The body stores muscle tension in structured patterns. The Body Stress Release practitioner is trained to recognize these patterns and determine where and in which direction they are located.

The practitioner tests the body for body stress and uses the body’s so-called bio-feedback mechanism: when muscle tension is stuck somewhere, the body shows this during the test via a short reflex. In this way, we carefully determine which releases the client needs. The release consists of light manual impulses in the right place and in the right direction.

The body can release the muscle tension layer by layer through these impulses. This gives the nervous system space again and the communication between the brain and the body will be restored.

This is crucial for the self-healing capacity that ensures natural resilience.

Start with Body Stress Release

Body Stress Release is a process that starts with 3 appointments

We make these for day 1, 4 and 11. Sometimes these three treatments can be enough to get rid of your complaints, but keep in mind that often at least 6 treatments are needed, but in other cases, it may take months for the body to shift.

The need for follow-up treatments and the frequency of these treatments differ per person. This also depends on:
